The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has lodged a corruption case against former vice-chancellor of the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences Dr Balbhadra Prasad Das.
The constitutional anti-graft body has filed a case with the Special Court on Tuesday accusing him of corruption of Rs 77,192,860. The CIAA claims that Dr Das amassed wealth worth that amount through illegal means while serving in public office.
He had started government service as junior registrar on July 11, 1993 and was promoted to vice-chancellor of BPKIHS on January 1, 2012. He had worked as professor after that.
CIAA investigation claims he earned Rs 153,203,330 while in public service until July 15, 2019. CIAA Spokesperson Tara Nath Adhikari said he seems to have been involved in the offense of corruption as source of many of his investment and expenses during the period could not be revealed and he was leading a high-end lifestyle unusual for his position.
Wife of Dr Das, Poonam, has also been made defendant as he kept the wealth he amassed in the name of his wife. The CIAA, however, said she has been made defendant only for confiscation of the illegal wealth.
